Configuration of subdomains on your Windows VPS Server

To configure a subdomain on your Windows VPS Server you need to follow these steps:

  • in the tools section click on the ‘Aggiungi nuovo sottodominio’ (Add new subdomain) icon;
  • select the type of hosting and click on OK;
  • select physical hosting if you wish to create a virtual host for the domain;
  • select subdomain in the subfolder to create a virtual subdomain which will use the physical structure of the second level domain. In this case you cannot create a separate FTP account, you must use the details set for the main FTP access;

    A) Physical Hosting
  • type in the name that you wish to assign to the subdomain in the Subdomain textarea;
  • if the third level domain is managed by the administrator leave the option ‘Utilizzare l'account FTP del dominio principale’ (Use the  FTP account of the main domain) selected, if the subdomain is managed by another person select the option ‘Crea un utente FTP per questo sottodominio’ (Create an FTP user for this subdomain) and then enter the login and password that will be used to access the web space via FTP;
  • if you wish to set the quantity of space that the third level domain should occupy enter the limit in GB in the textarea Quota hard disk;
  • if you wish to publish the website with SiteBuilder (to build the website through the interface  found in the plesk control panel) leave the relevant checkbox selected, in this case the publication parameters will be set in the following path:  /subdomains/SUBDOMAINNAME/httpdocs/sitebuilder;
  • in the ‘Servizi’ (Services) section you need to select the extensions and the support required for the website to work correctly. If the ASP.NET support is disenabled on the main domain it will no longer be available for the subdomain;
  • in this type of subdomain you can enable the statistics to which you can access at: https://sottodominio.dominio.xxx/plesk-stat/ using the same login details as those selected for the FTP access. Those who are authorized to manage the third level domain can change the login details for the FTP access but not the login and password to access the statistics;
  • select the option ‘Permessi addizionali di lettura/modifica’ (Additional read/change permissions) if you need a database based on files (like Jet) located in the root of the httpdocs or httpsdocs folders;
  • last of all click on OK to confirm your settings.

    B) Subdomain in the subfolder
  • type in the name that you wish to give to the subdomain in the Subdomain textarea;
  • by deselecting the checkbox labelled ‘Crea directory fisica per il sottodominio’ (Create a physical directory for the subdomain), you can indicate the physical path where the files of the subdomain must reside, whereas, if ‘Crea directory fisica per il sottodominio’ (Create a physical directory for the subdomain) is selected, a directory with the same name as the third level domain will be created;
  • if you wish to publish the website with SiteBuilder (to build the website through the interface  found in the plesk control panel) leave the relevant checkbox selected, in this case the publication parameters will be set in the following path:  /httpdocs/SUBDOMAINNAME/;
  • in the ‘Servizi’ (Services) section you need to select the extensions and the support required for the website to work correctly. If the ASP.NET support is disenabled on the main domain it will no longer be available for the subdomain;
  • last of all click on OK to confirm your settings.

    The distribution of the DNS and therefore correct display of the subdomain may take 24/48 hours.

    To delete a subdomain go to the plesk control panel, select the chosen domain name and click on the ‘sottodomini’ (subdomains) icon, flag the checkbox relevant to the third level domain that you wish to delete and click on the ‘Elimina selezionati’ (Delete selected) button, confirm that you wish to delete and press the OK button, the subdomain will be deleted from the server.

    ATTENTION!!! The subdomains created through this process will only be displayed if the corresponding record is active on the authoritative nameservers.

    If the domain is registered with Aruba, you need to access the DNS Management control panel (http://admin.aruba.it) then add a new host, assigning the ip of the server to the new third level domain.
    If the domain is managed by a different maintainer, you need to have the record added.
